A
little background to our handcrafted wines
La
Bodega del Garroferal is situated on the edge of the beautiful
village of Murla, in the heart of the Jalon Valley (or Vall de
Pop) in the province of Alicante, Spain. This coastal strip of Spain, running from Valencia in the
North to just below Alicante in the South is also known as the
Costa Blanca. The
bustling Mediterranean coastal resorts of Javea, Moraira,
Denia and Calpe are only a short 30 minute drive away and yet
the valley retains it rural charm with vineyards as well as
almond groves and orchards of orange trees.
The spectacular mountains are a walker’s paradise
with many recognised trails and routes.
The Almond blossom in late January, early February each
year is a particularly beautiful time, when the whole valley
seems to turn shades of white & pink.
Helen
and I established the Bodega in 2002 when we relocated to
Spain from South Africa. We had both been employed in the wine industry in South
Africa for many years and it was our dream to start our own
small winery. We
chose this particular corner of Spain as we believe it offered
as yet undiscovered potential for the production of top
quality wines. This
region has been growing grapes to make wine since Roman times!
Why do
all of our wines have musical names?
I
bring my love of music to my wine making.
I studied music and was very active with a choir in
Germany.
I feel that a balanced wine can express itself in the
same way as a piece of music.
A harmony in wine can be as melodious as a harmony in
music.
